Stages of a Chair

Most of my chairs are made of Kanuka which is a prolific native tree growing locally which produces dense and resilient timber ideal for chairmaking.
My designs are influenced by a combination of the characteristics and qualities of the available wood and a blend of a number of traditional patterns.

The freshly cut tree is cut into lengths then split to the rough size.

Trimmed with an axe.

Then a draw knife.

Turned on a pole lathe.

Curved parts are steamed and bent.

Mortice holes are bored with a brace and bit.

The frame is assembled.
